Hi all,

If you run the Synchronet ircd, then this is for you.

I've been working with Claude to track down a number of bugs that I have been keeping track of that cause various issues such as:

Duplicate user names on different servers
Gaining ops on an occupied channel on a newly joined server
Forcing nickname collisions and the wrong one being disconnected
Channels become desycned and you're unable to op/deop
Desync causes Services not to recognize users or channels
Duplicate servers appearing in /links list

plus a few other bugs that destablize the network.

I will be introducing server capabilities that will be present in the updated ircd servers that will be checked against the hub. Any leaf node (That's you and your ircd on your BBS), that does not have the capabilities will be rejected from joining to the hub.

This is so that Sysops who do not upgrade for one reason or another will not be able to destablize the network due to the aforementioned bugs.

The hubs will run in a non-enforcing mode for a time, which means both the server and any IRCops will get a notice warning that SBBSTSFIX is not present. I envision the hubs will run in that mode until at least a few weeks after official release of the current development version. Once Enforcing is turned on, older versions of the ircd will not be able to connect to the hubs.

While I cannot provide assistance to Sysops who wish to upgrade, I can help to ensure your ircd is configured properly once the update is complete.

This has been discussed with Digital Man and he has given his blessing. Please let me know here or privately if you have any questions or concerns. I know updating can be a daunting task but we have great tools to help you. You, of course, always have your nightly backup, right? RIGHT?! :)

can't fix bugs without AI huh?

why not move the entire network over to an IRCd with a proven track record of a few tens of thousands of concurrent users? and then other BBS softwares can link easily too.

I don't see you making any effort to resolve the issues we have.

Do you have any proof that a Synchronet IRCd cannot have tens of thousands of users? The Synchronet IRCd is based on Bahamut, which is what DALnet uses, and has hosted hundreds of thousands of users on one server.

Oh, it's ok for Digital Man to use AI to fix bugs in Synchronet that he wrote and it extremely familiar with but it's not ok for me to use AI to fix bugs in code I never wrote and am unfamiliar with but know it needs doing.

If DM had made the original post, what would your response have been?

So there should only ever be one of any kind of software? That doesn't sound like a very fun or interesting world.

I am not recreating the wheel at all. Cyan already created it with ircd.js. I'm just fixing a few spokes and adding some air.

AI developer tools can be a big help in getting stuff done.. AI can often do a more thorough job of investigating code & such than a human can, and do it faster than a human, too.
